The Psalmist wrote, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). On our journey of discipleship, it is important to meditate on God’s Word, and even memorize it so the Word is stored in our heart for eternity, and so we can make use of it even if the BibleGateway app fails or someone takes away our Bible. In addition to learning scripture, it’s good to become intimately familiar with the Creeds and other statements of faith that summarize what the Bible teaches. This can guard us from misapplying the Word.

During this month of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, you are invited to join the congregation in the Mighty Messenger Memory 500!  (AKA “3M500″)

In the instructions at the bottom of this page, you will find a link to a list of 500 Bible passages, Small Catechism passages, prayers, hymns, and other statements of our Christian faith. A paper copy will also be displayed near the sanctuary of St. Michael. Members and recent guests of the congregation, regardless of age, are invited to sign up for one or two of the items on the list.

Please help us reach the goal of memorizing all 500 items collectively by Reformation Day, October 31, 2017. Invite everyone in your family to pick something. Invite your friends who are members, fellow Small Group members, and friends who attend or are involved somehow at St. Michael. By choosing in item on the list (entering your name or “anonymous”), you are committing to memorize it well, and then check back in later this month to indicate when you are done. Just think, if a disaster took away all our Bibles and catechisms next year, this memory work will enable us to recreate a good chunk of scripture and the whole Small Catechism! And in the absence of disaster, what great things can God do with His Word alive in our hearts and minds?

Some suggestions for memorization: Copy it in your own handwriting. If it is a Bible verse or portion of the catechism, read what comes just before and after it to better understand the meaning. Say it out loud twenty or more times (do it 100 and you will likely never forget it). Try at least a few times to say it without looking. Spread your efforts out over a number of days so it is in your long term memory and not just short term. Once you really know the item by heart, recite it to someone. Then go back to the list and indicate that you have finished.

Remember, this is more than just an intellectual exercise. I hope that participating in the “3M500” will be fun for you and your family, and it’s good to hone your memory in any case, but the end goal of this challenge is for us to know the Truth more deeply so God can use it to transform us.

Your fellow disciple,

Pastor Toman

Signup Instructions:

  • If you want to sign up on paper rather than online, look for the sheet on the bulletin board in the Communication Center starting on October 2. To sign up online, follow the steps below.
  • Click one of the links below to open up the SignUpGenius page. (The form was limited to 400 items, so I made two):

-   Sign up for Items 1-237
-   Sign up for Items 238-500

  • On the page, click the “Sign Up” checkbox for the item you will memorize. Start with no more than two items, so others can be more likely to secure their preferred items, too. At first please don’t select anything that you already have memorized; save it for someone who can learn it the first time. If items remain in mid-October, feel free to choose as many items as you can realistically memorize, and feel free to select things you have memorized before.
  • Once you have clicked one or more checkboxes, click the “Submit and Sign Up” button. Enter your name or email address. (Email address is optional). Leave the “Completion Comment” field blank. (You will come back and fill that out after you are done memorizing it.)
  • Once you have the item memorized—not just for an instant but so you could also recall it in the future—go back to the online form and click on the “Edit” pencil. This time, when the form entries appear for your item, type something in the Completion Comment (“Done” or the date you completed it, etc.).
  • Praise the Lord for the power of His Word!

Here is a preview of the Items you’ll see in the signup sheets:
